If you are living in an area where Nassau County skunks are common, you may be facing a problem with them
rummaging through your garbage cans or getting into your garden and ruining it. The most excellent
way to get rid of this problem is through trapping the skunks, removing them, and relocating them at
least five miles away. In addition, you can install exclusion fence that will keep them away and prevent
them from going below your shed, porch, or deck. Sadly, there is no effective skunk repellent sprat, or
device, or powder. Also, unfortunately, not always will the New York city or county animal services help you deal
with your skunk issue.
However, lucky for you, it’s not so hard to trap Nassau County skunks without having them spray you. You can recognize skunks easily. They have dark black plus white coloring which serves as a caution of their attacks. Skunks have special glands lower their tails that will allow them to spray their authoritative scent up to fifteen feet. Their scent will burn the eyes and even cause a temporary blindness. Some animals will find the stench too much to bear. Whenever they feel threatened, New York skunks will become aggressive and they will spray their attackers, whether it is humans or other animals.
Adult Nassau County skunks can grow into 22 to thirty inches, and 8 to 12 pounds. They nocturnal creatures, so they will be found out during the night. Skunks will feed on approximately anything including worms, grubs, small rodents, insects, fruits, vegetables, garbage, and even pet food which is left outdoors. So, if you want to avoid having to face a problem with skunks, you may want to secure your garbage, never leave pet food outside at night, and put exclusion barriers and fences around your New York garden. If you succeed in discouraging skunks from coming into your garden or yard, you will not have to deal with them. If you felt that you had to trap skunks, make sure that you install many traps all around and use tubular shaped trapped which are narrow so that skunks will not feel afraid and spray. Narrow traps will not allow the New York skunks to up their tails and spray you. However, if you are not sure that you can handle this alone, you may want to call a Nassau County wildlife professional to help you with your problem.
